Antonio Vivaldi

This slow, lyrical movement comes from the hands of the Italian composer most known for his depiction of the seasons: Antonio Vivaldi. Here, we see his gift for creating evocative and expressive melodies and, with this, a sense of introspection and contemplation. We begin with a serene and contemplative atmosphere, the violin centre stage, all the while inviting the listener into a world of beauty and emotional depth. The music progresses unhurriedly, with each instrument and melody allowed to resonate and unfold gradually, and artful use of dynamics.

Although Vivaldi didn't write the 'Four Seasons' with the seasons in mind (similar to Holst's 'The Planets'), it is very clear why this movement was given the title "winter". The Largo is framed by two more movements in the minor key that capture the cruel essence of winter whilst this movement evokes a cosy, warm feeling of sitting around a warm fire with snowflakes falling outside as Christmas approaches. The pizzicato strings reflect the gentle patter of the snowflakes whilst the violin plays a beautifully lyrical melody that portrays the innocence of a young child's contentment as they enjoy the comfort and the joys that Christmas can bring.
